TIBCO ramps up on data analytics strength with Spotfire purchase

by Dana Gardner

TIBCO announced today the acquisition of privately held Spotfire Inc. for $195 million, a quick way for TIBCO to provide greater insight into business activities through improved data analysis.

The move follows Oracle’s recent purchase of Hyperion and further underscores the importance of business intelligence (BI) for service oriented architecture (SOA), business process management (BPM), and general business optimization.

Somerville, Mass.-based Spotfire’s BI capabilities will augment TIBCO’s infrastructure to help enterprises interact with data and to generate a more complete and contextual view into businesses for better-informed decisions, in near real-time.

Event-driven infrastructures increasingly provide diverse data, but making the data quickly actionable is the goal. Dashboards, proprietary application stacks, and transactional process management offer historical perspectives on data and trends, but in SOAs a more responsive analytics and response capability will be required.

“Our customers are constantly seeking a sustainable and systemic information advantage,” said Vivek Ranadivé, chairman and chief executive officer of TIBCO, in a release.

“Today’s front-line decision makers want … a broader, clearer view of how that data relates to processes,” said Christopher Ahlberg, CEO of Spotfire, in a release. ”By bolstering our platform with TIBCO’s real-time infrastructure, we can deliver a responsive and user-friendly environment for businesses to discover new insights, make better decisions and take action. This combination provides the information advantage that is a prerequisite to the competitive advantage that all our customers seek.”

The role of data and BI as essential ingredients to SOA will no doubt continue with more acquisitions in the coming months.

Interesting development really. Look forward to see the market consolidate further. Also, SpotFire is originally a company from Sweden based on research from Chalmers University of Technology
