Coincidence? You Decide

by Paula Thornton

A thought came to me this morning as I was reading a ZDNet blog piece on the inherent need to collaborate, even for something like a spreadsheet, and how Google is their pick for leading the charge. I was reflecting how both Google and Yahoo! effectively lead the charge on 2.0 thinking on a grand scale…but what struck me was that their roots are fundamentally about search.

I’m not sure if that should signal that FAST has some catching up to do, or they’re on the right track (the good news is that it is a great track to be on).

Berlin does a nice job of contrasting packaged software and Web-based applications and contrasting Google’s disruption of Microsoft’s juggernaut; but I would argue that he’s principally talking about horizontal apps/services for small- and medium-sized enterprises. We at FAST believe that enterprise search for the world’s greatest companies requires search to be incoporated into the fabric of the business. Said differently, FAST has chosen to apply an information access layer approach; whereas Google is introducing search and collaboration in (as many as possible) workplace tools. We’re both on the right track.
