Why are They Waiting for Wikis? – Search CIO

by Bill Ives

Just as I finished the post on CIO Magazine below, this email popped up, Waiting for wikis to break through, from Search CIO editor, Karen Guglielmo. It said that only 37% of enterprises are using wikis, according to a recent study by The Nemertes Research Group. Now some could see 37% as progress but why are the other 63% not using them.

Karen writes that the same study found that management, security and compliance were the key factors inhibiting enterprise adoption of wikis. To no surprise, “CIOs were also concerned with the way wikis were often brought into the organization — outside the control of IT.”

The short piece concluded that “CIOs who are adopting wikis into their organizations are experiencing numerous benefits, including improved productivity, reduced email, fewer meetings and better knowledge sharing.” Here is more good press to convince the other 63%. I see adopting wikis for group work projects, such as meeting planning or project management, as an easy decision for a CIO. They might as well be in the forefront that playing catchup with the employees who are going to try to bring in the tools anyway. With the smaller group initiatives, the CIO can then safely experiment in anticipation of broader enterprise applications.

Well, there are no silver bullets and Wikis are not one either. However, they can be very useful if used right. I still believe that a sound ECM architecture inte bottom enable integration of different useful technologies. Still, you can hear arguments saying ECM is dead and Search is the key and that is also a little bit oversimplified. Integrating the Wiki-interface within an ECM platform which has access to a good search technology (possibly more than one as well) is a sound approach. Efforts of that can be seen in the Alfresco platform and EMC Documentum will soon release a wiki object for use in their repositories.

without wiki, there is poor creation of information and retention, so whats the worry?
Enterprise 2.0 is not = = Web2.0 in the enterprise

CIOs get that right.
