Enterprise 2.0 and the Wikipedia Battle

by Paula Thornton

“On August 24, 2006, the ‘Enterprise 2.0′ entry in the Web-based encyclopedia Wikipedia was made a candidate for deletion. Wikipedia was an unusual encyclopedia because virtually anybody could start a new article or edit an existing one. This egalitarian philosophy had enabled very rapid growth but also led to the creation of some articles that did not meet established standards.”

Andrew McAfee himself shares his insights in a Harvard Business School case study on Wikipedia based on his own first-hand experience with the related collaboration. What’s interesting is that the main argument for deletion was that it was a buzzword that relied on another buzzword.

Odd, isn’t that what language is about – noting an event/phenomenon and engaging in dialog to understand it?

Check out a related HBS commentary, “How Wikipedia Works (or Doesn’t)” and share what struck you about what transpired. Indeed, this piece reflects the same points Jim McGee posted earlier this month with his neats and scruffies piece.

Where are the corolaries for 2.0 adoption in general?
