Charles - digital (or heck, traditional) ethnography is always intriguing. Looking forward to more posts from you.

Hey Charles, Glad to have you aboard. Fantastic first post.

re: point #3: I think it is the most likely, and it is how I describe the most lucrative market so far for enterprise social software: http://socialwrite.com/2007/12/20/where-the-f-is-my-market/

Nice to have such a great, solid voice aboard.
I'm game with everything you're suggesting here.
My spidey-senses have been particularly sensitive to 1 and 2, but that's just based on the walls I've been climbing.

I've just commented the article at oversighting.com: nice analysis, and I think that your "most speculative prediction", point 3, is the one which is most likely to happen, actually!

I agree with most of what you have to say there is a great interest in social media within the enterprise and for the most part there are not end to end vendors that provide a "total" solution more point solutions like wiki's blogs and so on. I do question your numbers of adoption of only 5% given the fact that this is a new area and has not been used in the enterprise on any scale I don't think there is a significant population to make a statistically significant determination of only a 5% adoption rate. I think that if you look at the favorable aspects of social media tool they allow person to person sharing of ideas in many forms/media and that is a area that email and to a certain extent IM have failed to do. I think given the breath of what a enterprise can provide via WEb 2.0 tool the adoption will be greater than 5% that said I think the proof will be in what happens when a significant amount of companies give it a shot.

great article!
