Hi Rob;
             I just came across this post and read with a lump in my throat. I did loose YarmouthCounty.com and all that went with it! It was great and it has taken me a long time to recuperate and only now am I beginning again!

After nearly dying in April 2008 I went through serious health issues and lost what it had taken me 4 years to accomplish!

I'm also afraid that I took a few people down with me, those whose Sites i was hosting! I'm very sorry for that and strive to someday make it right!

Now after 2 years of recovery, having survived two operations, depression, and near post traumatic stress disorder, I'm back!

This time I'm concentrating on the Home, Small, and Independent Business community with my new Site: http://YourIndependentBusinessConsultant.com

My hope is to provide the help and support these people need to succeed!

This is an excellent article. Thanks for exploring a trend that is nascent but seems so obvious. I think the death of local search and the fickleness of small business within the eyes of venture capitalists have really killed the funded evolution of what you outline. I'm not close enough to be sure. And you obviously tout the benefits of the organic evolution of the site!

Can you check the link for YarmouthCounty.org in your post. It seems like it has expired and there are quite a few similar sites - so I was hoping to hop out and take a look at the exact one that you reference (without too much searching around). Thanks.

Thanks for the information on Yarmouthcounty.com. I would have never realize that such a niche site can generate such value.

Brian gets it. The many US states that are trying to promote rural tourism with small amounts of money in each community can should take a page from Brian's book. Their neighbor is not the competition, their neighboring states are. Also, There is no leakage, because for the most part their marketing bucket will not hold water long enough to go from ladle to cup. Reaching collectively to a mass market through a non-print medium will give their message a chance to make a sale and retrieve meaningful management information.
