GE Corporation has probably one of the largest stables of scientists, engineers and inventors on the planet. But as part of its search for clean technologies, the global giant is turning to the social Web — via crowdsourcing — to identify new ideas from startups and innovators.
My colleague at CBS SmartPlanet, Heather Clancy, provides a look at GE’s $200 million open innovation competition — which seeks to rustle up “breakthrough ideas” that are targeted at what GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt describes as “digital energy technologies.”
GE, through this “Ecoimagination” program, seeks new ideas in renewable energy, grid deployments, and smart homes and buildings. The company has lined up a panel of venture capitalists, independent advisors and analysts to sort through entries for the competition, which will last about 10 weeks. The general public will also have a chance to view and vote on entries. Both small as well as big ideas are sought, and financial investment awards will scale from $100,000 and up. Add to that commercial opportunities in the form of distribution relationships, R&D validation, and partnerships.
